Answer to Question 1

ANS: C
The peritoneal cavity is insufflated with CO2 to an intraoperative pressure of 12 to 15 mm Hg to create the working space. Obese patients may need higher insufflation pressures to counteract the weight of the abdominal wall. The circulating nurse monitors this pressure during insufflation; it should not fall below 8 mm Hg. The intraperitoneal pressure should remain at 15 mm Hg for the average adult patient.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
A diagnostic laparoscope permits viewing of anatomic structures. Operating laparoscopes can be rigid, rigid hollow, or flexible and have a working channel for instruments. They can be used to visualize anatomic structures in procedures such as laparoscopy, gynecology, bronchoscopy, and sigmoidoscopy.
