Sponges and tapes that have been counted and bagged can be tied and thrown into the trash and removed from the room after being bagged.

Question 2

If a sterile towel is used to pack a wound during a case for use as a retractor, the circulating nurse does not have to be told because it is not radiographically detectable and it is not a countable item.

ANS: F
The sponges and tapes are not tied shut or discarded into the trash in case there is a discrepancy in the count at the end of the case.

ANS: F
If a surgeon uses a sterile towel as packing within a wound as a retractor, this is relayed to the circulating nurse and the number of towels is tracked along with the other countable items. It is accounted for at the end of the procedure. The use of towels for packing is discouraged because most reusable towels do not have radiographically detectable markers.
