Answer to Question 1

Wet tail is a proliferative ileitis caused by a campylobacter (bacterial) infection in the lower part of the small intestine, the ileum. It affects hamsters.

Answer to Question 2

Obtain an accurate weight in grams just prior to a blood draw. The maximum amount of blood that can be drawn from a (healthy) small rodent can be calculated from an average base volume of 70 ml/kg of body weight. Conversions must be accurately calculated due to the small size of these animals. For chinchillas, the volume of blood drawn should not exceed 0.5 ml/100g.
