Answer to Question 1

The easiest way to feed rats is to use commercially prepared pellets formulated for small animals; these
contain all of the nutrients that are necessary. Commercial rodent diets can be supplemented with small
amounts of dry dog food, crackers, cereal, fruits, or vegetables. Overfeeding a ration of fruits and vegetables
may cause diarrhea. In general, such treats should compose less than 10 percent of the daily diet.

Answer to Question 2

Rats are agile climbers. They are also excellent swimmers and can stay submerged under water for two to

Rats are surprisingly clean and odor-free. They will groom and clean themselves and each other.
Domesticated rats seldom bite; they will bite only when surprised or scared.
Rats can become very upset and angry. When upset, they will stiffen their body and arch their back. Every
hair will stand on end, giving it an imposing appearance. The tail will wag back and forth, and the animal
will shake.
Rats are gregarious. They do best when kept with other rats.
Rats are primarily nocturnal. Domestic rats that are kept as pets are active during the day.
