Children and the elderly are at a greater risk because they have a lower resistance to some of the disease-causing
organisms. Children are also at risk because they play with animals and play in areas that can become
contaminated by animals.

The cycle in question 4 is followed by the Western black-legged tick, except that the dusky-footed woodrat,
a common California rodent, is the reservoir for the Borrelia organism in the West.
