Answer to Question 1

To minimize tissue trauma during injections, the technician should follow beef quality
assurance recommendations. These include:
Using muscles on the neck cranial to the shoulder for all intramuscular injections.
Administering all subcutaneous injections cranial to the shoulder.
Using 18-16g  1 needles for vaccinations.
Administering a maximum of 10cc per injection site.
 Properly restraining animals during injection.
Ensuring that injection sites are at least 4 inches apart.

Keeping vaccination bottles (or any drug) clean, and using a new sterile needle when
drawing product from the bottle.
If an option is available, administering injections subcutaneously instead of intramuscularly.
Using clean sharp needles and changing needles every 8 to 10 injections when processing
large numbers of cattle.
