Answer to Question 1

Attachment phases must progress from preattachment to a goal-corrected partnership and correspond to stages of attachment in middle childhood (seeks friendships; confides in others; relies on others for reassurance; expresses concern over separation from family or friends). The stability of attachment would suggest that secure attachment in middle childhood would encourage stable and intimate relationships in both adolescence and adulthood. Poor attachment in infancy and/or middle childhood might be linked to unstable friend or partner relationships in adolescence or adulthood.
