Involuntary admissions are generally only invoked if the individual is judged potentially harmful to self, harmful to others, or unable to care for self.

Allowing the client to express his feelings about his planned surgery is not only important; it may be the most valuable intervention that the nurse can provide. By providing an opportunity for the client to express his emotions, the nurse is supporting the client as he confronts his own possible fears about the surgery and his life afterward.
