A task force is asking you to develop an ideal after-school program. What age groups and what activities would you include? Discuss the benefits of attending the after-school program in middle childhood.

Answer to Question 1

Answer must describe developmentally appropriate activities for specific age groups. Benefits of attending after-school programs include care and supervision; socialization and recreation; academic achievement; decreased drop-out and risk behaviors.

Answer to Question 2

Western culture emphasizes a difference between childhood and adulthood; indigenous cultures more often perceive development as continuous. Specific examples could include Mead's study of Samoans, American Indian tribes, Latino, or African American ethnic subcultures, including students' own families.
