Answer to Question 1

A
Setting mutual goals helps both nurses and clients to set realistic, attainable goals for pain management. Focusing on nursing care is not client centered; administering narcotic analgesics should not be a focus of pain management; and telling the client to think of something else does not address the problem of pain.

Answer to Question 2

A
Forensic nursing requires the ability to address the issues and provide care in a truly neutral manner. All forensic nurses, whatever their specific title or responsibilities, must therefore be objective and not be motivated by any personal beliefs about what should or should not happen to patients involved in the criminal justice system. Street smarts can be a desirable trait in working with perpetrators, especially in hostage negotiation situations. Forensic nurses sometimes serve the court or the court's officers rather than the patient, so discomfort with doing so would be a concern in some forensic nursing roles but not in others. Forensic roles vary in the educational preparation required of practitioners, but a number of forensic roles exist for nurses with 2-, 3-, or 4-year degrees.
