In the absence of a chaplain, the nurse determines that it would be relevant to assess the emo-tional experiences the client has encountered in experiencing his faith. Which inquiry will elicit this information?

  1. Describe the emotions you have experienced in relation to your spirituality.
  2. What success have you had in adapting your beliefs to new experiences?
  3. What impact has your illness had on your moral obligations?
  4. Do the rituals and practices of your religion support you?

Question 2

A client is spending a great deal of time praying, chanting, and reading religious doctrine. He is reluctant to attend therapeutic groups as a result of his religious preoccupation. The best plan would be to:

  1. Allow the client a set amount of time each day to express his religion, with the understanding that he attend groups and adhere to the treatment program
  2. Inform the client that he can only express his religion with the chaplain and needs to follow the treatment program the rest of the time
  3. Tell the client he is being inappropriate and disruptive to others; then notify the client's physician to increase his medication as soon as possible
  4. Ignore the client's hyperreligiosity since it will diminish with medication therapy

Answer to Question 1

ANS: 1
There are a number of components in a spiritual assessment. Option 1 directly inquires about the emotional experiences associated with the client's spirituality, which is one factor in an assess-ment of experience and emotion. Option 2 assesses courage and growth. Option 3 assesses voca-tion and obligation. Option 4 assesses rituals and practices.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: 1
It is important that the client become engaged in therapeutic activities. Setting limits on religious activities that preoccupy him and prevent therapeutic engagement will foster the goals of the treatment plan. Options 2 and 3 are unnecessarily restrictive. Option 4 will not foster therapeutic engagement.

Every flu season is different, and even healthy people can get extremely sick from the flu, as well as spread it to others. The flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. Every person over six months of age should get an annual flu vaccine. The vaccine cannot cause you to get influenza, but in some seasons, may not be completely able to prevent you from acquiring influenza due to changes in causative viruses. The viruses in the flu shot are killed—there is no way they can give you the flu. Minor side effects include soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given. It is possible to develop a slight fever, and body aches, but these are simply signs that the body is responding to the vaccine and making itself ready to fight off the influenza virus should you come in contact with it.
