Answer to Question 1

  • The setting is the gloomy kitchen of the Wrights farmhouse, a cramped and cluttered room in a house that is even more isolated and depressing than neighboring farms. As Mrs. Hale says, I stayed away because it werent cheerfuland thats why I ought to have come. IIve never liked this place. Maybe because its down in a hollow and you dont see the road. I dunno what it is but its a lonesome place and always was. I wish I had come over to see Minnie Foster sometimes. Mrs. Wright was essentially trapped in her life there with her increasingly abusive husband, and she saw no other way out of it than the one that she ultimately took.

Answer to Question 2

  • The chorus is generally on the side of Creon, echoing his arguments, supporting his decisions, and castigating Antigone for her stubborn refusal to submit to Creons law, as in the following lines:

You went to the extreme of daring
And against the high throne of Justice You fell, my daughter, grievously.
But perhaps it was for some ordeal of your father That you are paying requital.
. . .
There is a certain reverence for piety. But for him in authority, he cannot see that authority defied; it is your own self-willed temper, that has destroyed you.
