Answer to Question 1

  • One way of answering this question would be to reprint the entire poem. Despite the hypothetical and somewhat tenuous examples given in the previous answer, there are, strictly speaking, no words or phrases in the poem that have a literal connection with a piano.

Answer to Question 2

  • The words speed, color, and selectionand, to stretch a bit, strong and even awkwardare all terms that might very well occur in a description of a musical composition or of a particular recording or performance of a piece of music. There are very few, if any, words that seem to directly describe a piano itself, though spread might suggest the fingers of a pianist while playing, the phrase it shuts and it lifts might call to mind the image of a piano lid, and centre might evoke the center of the keyboard, where middle C is located.
