Answer to Question 1

  • Once Espinosa begins reading the Gospel, he suddenly makes an intense connection with the Gutre family. Until then conversation had proved difficult. They treat him with ever-greater respect and follow his orders. He catches them talking about him respectfully, but he does not understand the significance of their change in behavior until too late.

Answer to Question 2

  • Espinosa's two qualities seal his fate. His gift for public speaking makes his renditions of the Gospel particularly effective to the illiterate Gutre family. He even rises to his feet when reading the parables. His unlimited kindness makes him a Christ figurethe gentle man who sacrifices himself to redeem others. (One can find significance to virtually all of Espinosa's other attributes as listed in the first paragraph.)
