Answer to Question 1

  • The storm is unexpected and, like ones passions, it comes and goes with a powerful force. The force of the rain begins to flood Calixtas house after Alce walks onto her porch. The storm raging within Calixta needs release in her former lover who understands this aspect of her nature.

Chopin describes the literal storm with language that can also be used to describe Calixtas affair. In Part I, the storm seemed to be ripping great furrows in the distant field. After Alce enters Calixtas home, the rain beat upon the low, shingled roof with a force and clatter that threatened to break an entrance and deluge them there. As they consummate their passion, they did not heed the crashing torrents, and the roar of the elements made her laugh. And after he possessed her, the storm ends: the growl of the thunder was distant and passing away.

Answer to Question 2

  • Before the storm hits, Bobint buys his wife a can of shrimps. However fond she may be of shrimp, this simple gesture suggests that he sees Calixta as a wife, housekeeper, cook, and mothernot as a sexual, passionate woman. Clearly he loves her, but the love feels rooted in familiarity rather than eroticism. That he sits on the keg stolidly holding the can of shrimps while the storm burst suggests he is trying to hold onto his wife, however imperfectly his attempt may be. It is this stolidness, perhaps, that has prevented him from ever exploring his wifes passionate nature.
