Answer to Question 1

The buzzing or humming sound of a beehive comes from the flapping of the wings of the nursery bees. The flapping of the wings serves two purposes: to cool the hive to an even temperature of 95F, and to help evaporate moisture from the stored nectar, which helps concentrate it into honey.

Answer to Question 2

When a young queen emerges as the new queen for the hive, she goes on what is called her maiden flight. During the maiden flight, she attracts drones with a unique scent, and may mate with as many as a dozen of them. The drones that mate then die, and the queen retains enough sperm to fertilize her eggs for as long as four years.
