Answer to Question 1

Ticks cause damage by penetrating the skin and sucking blood from the host animal. This leaves a sore that can be an avenue for disease organisms, and it can cause anemia from blood loss. Lice cause animals discomfort by biting or piercing the host animal's skin. This causes the animal to rub and scratch against posts, trees, or other objects to obtain relief. In so doing, however, they lose grazing or eating time, and breeding processes may be interrupted. The larvae of heel flies burrow through the soft tissue of an animal, all the way from the leg to the back, where they eat a hole in the skin for a breathing hole. This damages meat and hides.
