Some of the advantages of compost as compared to manure are that compost has a slower release of nutrients, it spreads easier, it has fewer weed seeds, there is less potential for nutrient runoff, it has fewer pathogens, it has less odor, and there are fewer NOP restrictions on the time of compost application. Some of the disadvantages are that compost is more expensive, it can be harder to find, it has a lower nutrient content, it takes additional time and labor to produce, and nutrients can be lost to leaching during the compost-making process.
