Answer to Question 1

D

Answer to Question 2

The primary reason that flooding and very wet soil damage plants is their impact on respiration, the oxygen-dependent process by which plant cells convert energy for maintenance, and active uptake of nutrients. Flooding fills soil pores with water and prevents oxygen diffusion to plant roots. In the absence of respiration, carbon dioxide and other compounds like ethanol and butyric acid accumulate near roots. Consequently, plant roots become nonfunctional and ultimately die.
Without functioning roots, plants cannot take up water (even though the root may be submerged) or nutrients for transport to the shoot. Legumes like soybean and alfalfa suffer nodule delay and lose the capacity for biological nitrogen fixation.
Wet soils have a greater incidence soil-borne, root and crown diseases including Phytophthora spp. and Pythium spp.
Saturated and flooded soils can lead to loss of nitrogen fertilizers from the plant root zone. This is detrimental to annual crops like corn and small grains that depend on nitrogen fertilization for high yields.
