Answer to Question 1

The first main element is a carbohydrate, either sucrose or glucose; this is the food of fresh flower
foods. Carbohydrate is the substrate used for energy to carry on life processes such as growth and
floral opening. A snag is that these carbohydrates also help fungi and bacteria to grow. In order to
counteract that, a biocide component, the second main element, aids in keeping bacterial growth along
with fungi, yeasts, and molds from plugging-up water-conducting vessels. The third component, citric
acid, lowers water pH, which, ideally, should be 3.0-4.5, making the solution more acidic. This aids in
water flow into the stem because moisture in plant material is acidic.

Answer to Question 2
