Answer to Question 1

In the 1940s, women entered the workforce to replace men who had gone off to fight in World War II.
While many women were occupied in work that would not allow for a homey atmosphere, their
clerical and managerial positions allowed for decoration of the work environment, hence the touch of
bringing houseplants to the office. This nod toward the aesthetics of the workplace, making it more
tolerable over the weeks and months, initiated the interiorscape industry.
