During the 19th century, glass manufacturing aided in providing glazes for greenhouses. Higher quality
glass for use in greenhouses was imported from Europe until long after the U.S. Civil War after the
quality of wavy, bubbled American glass was questioned. Imperfections in the glass could magnify
the sun's rays, causing burning and scorching of delicate crops within the greenhouse.
