Answer to Question 1

In a workable mix, all the aggregates are clean, all Portland cement is mixed with water to form a
cement paste and no dry powder is present, every particle of aggregate is covered with cement paste,
aggregates are distributed evenly throughout the mix, no more than the recommended amount of water
is added, no lumps are present, the mixture has uniform color and consistency, and lastly, the mixture
can be mixed, moved, and placed with a shovel or spade.

Answer to Question 2

Ratio is the proportion of cement to fine and coarse aggregate. The ratio is expressed as a three-digit
number called a mix.
