Answer to Question 1

Annual rings are alternating layers of relatively large, soft, light-colored cells produced in the spring and thinner,
denser, darker-colored cells produced in summer. The width of the ring indicates how fast the tree grew during
that season. A scorched ring indicates a fire during the season. Damage of other kinds may be recorded in growth
rings.

Answer to Question 2

A tree grows in length by the production of new cells at the tips of the branches and roots by the active growth
cells known as meristematic tissue. It grows in diameter by the production of new cells in the cambium layer,
which lies between the bark and wood.
