Answer to Question 1

The forest was a friend in the sense that it provided food, in the form of game; shelter, in the form of lumber, poles,
and timber; and warmth, in the form of firewood. On the other hand, forests covered the land so completely that
fields had to be cleared before the colonists could plant crops, they gave potential enemies a place to hide, and
they made travel difficult. In that sense, the forest was an enemy to the early settlers.

Answer to Question 2

Climate moderation (shade, cooling, windbreak).
Carbon Dioxide-Oxygen exchange (CO2 is taken in and O2 is released during photosynthesis.)
