Answer to Question 1

At least one-half of the land area in this country was forested 300 years ago. Almost 70 percent (about 738 million
acres) of that area is still forested today. More wood is produced today because so much forest land is actively
managed. A mature forest produces no new wood. As an old tree dies naturally, new trees take its place and the net
production of wood is zero. In addition, some new varieties of commercial trees are faster growers than native trees

Answer to Question 2

At least 117 vertebrate species have gone extinct in the United States since colonial times. When the population of
a species falls too low, it can be considered threatened. If it falls to the point that exceptional efforts are required
to help it survive, it is said to be endangered. Overhunting/overfishing, disease, and habitat destruction are the
primary factors leading to extinction
