Answer to Question 1

Because the roots of boxwood require a lot of oxygen, they should not be mulched. For
the same reason, when mulching rhododendrons, use only 2 or 3 inches of coarse
material.



Answer to Question 2

When planting a broadleaf evergreen in wet, poorly drained soil it is necessary to use a
raised bed that is above the soil line. Bring in enough good, well-drained topsoil of the
proper pH or plant entirely in a soilless mix of two parts pine bark and one part peat
moss. Raise the bed so the plant root ball sets on top of the existing, poorly drained soil
