Answer to Question 1

While miniature or dish gardening focuses on design using a variety of complementary
plants in a small space, bonsai focuses on one type of plant, a tree. A horticulturalist
practicing the art of bonsai consciously prunes and tends a container-grown tree in
miniature. Part of bonsai tradition is to make these plants appear old and rugged or
graceful and wispy, just as they appear in nature after the passing of many generations

Answer to Question 2

The eight steps that are required in the construction of a bonsai planting include:1.
Determining the plant shape, or visualizing how the plant will look in its final form
2. Pruning to remove all unwanted branches, ensuring enough branches remain to form
the desired shape.

3. Wiring the remaining branches to force their growth in the desired direction, not the
direction they naturally grow.
4. Pruning the top of the plant to remove or shorten small branches.
5. Pruning the roots to make the plant fit the container.
6. Placing the plant in the desired container, after preparing the container for drainage.
7. Adding potting medium to the container.
8. Watering the plant to soak the roots and medium.
