Answer to Question 1

A brick or stone walkway can be unifying as it ambles from one area of the landscape to
another. Establishing a rhythm through plants or hardscape materials will help to unify a
design. A landscape design should work together as a whole, not have several very
different parts that compete for attention

The five basic design principles that should be considered in designing landscapes are
emphasis (focal point), balance, proportion and scale, rhythm, variety and unity.
