Answer to Question 1

Cotton became so important because of its popularity as a fiber. It was needed in great
quantities in Europe to make clothing and cloth. Clothing made from cotton was more
comfortable and more affordable, thus everyone wanted it. As a result, southern farmers
produced mainly cotton. Few other commodities were produced, because the whole
economy of the South was wrapped around the production of cotton.

Answer to Question 2

Scientific research created dramatic advances in agriculture. No longer were
advancements made through trial and error, which took a great deal of time and money.
Instead, advancements were made according to specific methods that made the research
more efficient and reliable. Scientific research continues to produce new technologies
that make agriculture more efficient.
