Consider a pot measuring 3 inches deep and a cut flower bench 8 inches deep. Both contain the same root substrate, were recently watered, and have just stopped draining. How do the air and water contents in a cubic inch of substrate located in the top inch of each container compare?

More water and less air are in the top inch of the 3 inch pot.

Answer to Question 2

The maximum amount of water the root substrate can hold against
gravity in a specified container which has drainage holes in the bottom.
