Answer to Question 1

Because it allows sunlight to enter into the center of the tree and this promotes more fruit production. It also keeps the branches lower to the ground for easier picking.

Answer to Question 2

The tree is not old enough, there is a pollination problem, there is not enough winter chilling to induce flowering, there is insufficient sunlight, there was frost or rain during the pollination period and this prevented pollination
