Horses would have a comparative nutritional advantage over cattle on a rangeland dominated by tall, coarse, mature, grasses where browse and forbs are unavailable. Horses can compensate for the low quality of the feed by higher, intake than cattle and by coprophagy

Grassland climate involves a moderate annual precipitation (250-700 mm) that generally occurs as frequent light rains over an extended period (90 days or more). In temperate areas light rains during that summer favor grassland. Soils are usually deep (over 2 m), loamy textured, high in organic matter and very fertile
