Answer to Question 1

A
A paracentesis is the aspiration of fluid from the abdominal cavity. The nurse should have the patient void and obtain a body weight before the procedure. The patient should be placed in a high Fowler's position in a chair or sitting on the side of the bed. It is not necessary for the patient to increase fluids or to keep the patient NPO for four hours before the procedure.
