Answer to Question 1

B
Postdural puncture headache, caused by the loss of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain, is a significant complication of either spinal or epidural anesthesia. Because of the vascular dilation they produce, widespread spinal or epidural blocks can cause lowered blood pressure; some risk of bleeding also exists with these blocks.

Answer to Question 2

A
In an epidural block, a local anesthetic is injected into the epidural space to simultaneously anesthetize a number of spinal nerves. In a spinal block (subarachnoid block), a local anesthetic is injected into the cerebrospinal fluid. Epidural and spinal blocks are used to anesthetize a large area of the body, such as the abdomen, pelvis, perineum, or lower extremities. Epidural anesthesia can be used for surgical procedures, during labor, and for postoperative pain relief.
