Answer to Question 1

A
When a patient's immune system causes abnormal reactions to a medication, the patient has a medication allergy. Some medications cause unpredictable effects, such as idiosyncratic reactions, in which a patient overreacts or underreacts to a medication or has a reaction different from what is expected. Sudden constriction of bronchiolar muscles, edema of the pharynx and larynx, and severe wheezing and shortness of breath all characterize severe or anaphylactic reactions. A medication interaction occurs when one medication modifies the action of another medication.

Answer to Question 2

B
When preparing a patient for ambulation, dangling is an important technique. You assist the pa-tient to a sitting position with the legs dangling off the side of the bed and have the patient rest for 1 to 2 minutes before standing. When the patient has been flat for extended periods, blood pressure drops when the patient stands. Dangling helps to prevent this. Sitting up in bed or plac-ing the patient in high- or low-Fowler's position does not allow for the changes in circulation to occur before ambulation.
