Answer to Question 1

B
The client who smokes is at greater risk for postoperative pulmonary complications than is a nonsmoker.
The fact that the client's brother had a tonsillectomy at 11 years of age does not place the client at risk for surgery.
The presence of an IV infusion does not place the client at risk for surgery. An IV should be in place for surgery, so access is available to administer medications, fluids, or blood products if necessary. Keeping the client well hydrated will help prevent postoperative thrombophlebitis.
A history of employment as a computer programmer does not make the client a surgical risk.

Answer to Question 2

A
Electricity is needed for refrigeration of food, and lack of electricity could have contributed to the nausea, vomiting, and diarrheapotential food poisoning. This discussion about the patient's electrical needs can be referred to social services. The water supply, the increased number of individuals in the home, and not having a microwave may or may not be concerns but do not pertain to the current health care needs of this patient.
