Underlying his descriptions were two assumptions: much of a manager's time is spent in human relations, and managers are more reactive than proactive. These assumptions provided the basis for three categories of behaviors: interpersonal roles, informational roles, and decisional roles. Mintzberg described three interpersonal roles: figurehead, leader, and liaison. The three informational roles he described are monitor, disseminator, and spokesperson.
