Dopamine requires frequent assessment of the patient's IV site. Correct hypovolemia with vol-ume expanders before initiating dopamine therapy. Increase infusion rate as needed. Extravasa-tion may cause tissue necrosis and sloughing.

In general, adrenergic agonists are used to increase blood pressure in patients with severe hypo-tension, to reverse anaphylactic shock, and to minimize bleeding at a superficial operative site (in conjunction with local anesthetics).
