Without some correction, sample variability is said to be biased.. Define the term biased, and explain how this bias is corrected in the formula for sample variance.

  What will be an ideal response?

Answer to Question 1

Without some correction, sample variability tends to be smaller than the population variability. Whenever a statistic consistently underestimates (or overestimates) the corresponding population parameter, the statistic is said to be biased. The bias in sample variability is corrected by dividing the sum of squared deviations (SS) by n  1 (instead of n) in the formula for sample variance.

Answer to Question 2

SS = 3, 2 = 1, and  = 1

About one in five American adults and teenagers have had a genital herpes infection—and most of them don't know it. People with genital herpes have at least twice the risk of becoming infected with HIV if exposed to it than those people who do not have genital herpes.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released reports detailing the deaths of infants (younger than 1 year of age) who died after being given cold and cough medications. This underscores the importance of educating parents that children younger than 2 years of age should never be given over-the-counter cold and cough medications without consulting their physicians.
