Because of the potential for rebound nasal congestion, topical application should be limited to 3 to 5 days.
With topical administration, vasoconstriction is rapid and intense, leading to a quick reduction in nasal congestion.
Rebound nasal congestion can occur if the drug is used for longer than 5 days, therefore the drug should not be continued until the problem resolves.
Topical sympathomimetics are not contraindicated if a patient has a fever.
