Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
To calculate osmolality, use the equation:
2(serum Na concentration) + BUN/3 + glucose level/18.
2(142) + 15/3 + 90/18 = 294 mOsm/kg, or iso-osmolality.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
Normal osmolality is 275 to 295 mOsm/kg. This client is therefore hypo-osmolar.
