Tacrine carries a high risk of serious liver injury. Damage is monitored by assessing the serum for elevations in alanine aminotransferase, an enzyme released from liver cells when they are injured.
Tacrine is not nephrotoxic, thus monitoring of the blood urea nitrogen is not necessary.
