Answer to Question 1

B
B. Puncture of infusion tubing requires immediate change.
A. The Intravenous Nurses Society (INS) (2000 ) recommends 72-hour intervals for continuous tubing changes, adding that 48-hour tubing changes may be considered if the rate of catheter-related infection and phlebitis in an institution exceeds 5.
C. Decreased or absent flow of IV fluid is indicated by decreased rate. Assess IV infusion system for patency. Recalibrate drip rate on new tubing. Assess IV site for infiltration.
D. The INS also states that tubing used for intermittent infusion through an injection/access port should be changed every 24 hours because both ends of this tubing are manipulated more frequently than tubing used for continuous infusion.
