Double gloving significantly reduces perforations to the innermost glove. Handwashing remains the cornerstone of surgical asepsis.

In wound care the area being cleansed is considered clean and the surrounding skin surfaces are considered contaminated without respect to whether the wound is infected. Within the wound the irrigation flow is directed from healthy tissue toward infected tissue.
