D. Cleanse face of stoma with povidone-iodine swabs using circular motion from center outward. Using new swab each time, repeat twice.
A. Apply sterile gloves.
B. With dominant hand, gently insert catheter 2 to 2 inches (5 to 6.5 cm) into stoma.
C. Maintain container below level of stoma. Have client cough as needed. Urine may flow around and through catheter. This is acceptable, but only urine from catheter is desired. Normally, wait 5 minutes; if no urine is in container, pinch catheter and remove; direct urine trapped in catheter into cup.
