C. Apply occlusive transparent or occlusive gauze dressing over site.
A. Change sterile glovesensures that microorganisms removed during preparation are not introduced to catheter site.
B. Nurse saturates 4  4 gauze pads with alcohol, and physician scrubs area using circular motion from shoulder to ear to chin to nipple for approximately 1 minute. Alcohol cleans and defats skin.
D. Nurse initially runs the IV fluid in at a rapid rate (macrodrip 20 to 30 gtt/min, microdrip 60 gtt/min) for 5 to 10 minutesassesses whether fluid is infusing easily through newly inserted line.

Immediately squeeze the end of the tube to crush the ampule, and push the tip of the swab into fluid medium.
