Answer to Question 1

Number of siblings that a friend has is a discrete random variable, since it can only assume a countable number of numerical values. A value of 1.68, for example, would not make sense.

Length of last phone call to boyfriend / girlfriend is a continuous random variable, since it can assume an uncountable number of numerical values. In other words, length is a measurement and can assume any value along a line interval including all possible fractions.

Answer to Question 2

D

The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
