early career as a blues singer, composer, pianist
1921first drawn to gospel
1932wrote Precious Lord (gives up performing blues)
published his own compositions, not in books: sheet music
promoter, organizer, and manager
started with singer Sallie Martin the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses
also performed and toured with Mahalia Jackson
promoted the solo gospel singer
