Answer to Question 1

Differences:

Rite = Pagan ritual

Symphony - medieval-style homage to God

Rite - vivid, colorful, and programmatic

Symphony - austere, somewhat dry, detached

Rite - Rich in complex rhythms and textures, shift of tempo and mood, and tuneful snippets

Symphony- maintains a steady pulse an is more transparent with most memorable melodic material being extremely simple

Common features:

irregular blocks of sound, active ostinato patterns

Symphony is not an ongoing evolution of Stravinsky's musical approach, but is more like an abrupt change of direction.

Stravinsky was a part of modern culture in western Europe, yet he had an intense interest in the past.

Early clockmakers apparently thought that the IIII balanced out the VIII (used for the number 8) on the clock face and that it just looked better.
